"Skincare Diet" Part 1: The Products

Korean Beauty Gurus have been encouraging the 11 step skincare system for years now. “Glass Skin” is all over Instagram. Beauty bloggers everywhere share “#SundayShelfies” with, like, a million products lined up... complete with double cleansing oils, toners, serums, masks, lotions, oils, and spot treatments to nourish the skin to health and beauty.

So why after a full year of religiously following these steps am I still paying (quite a lot of money) for fraxel laser treatments to improve my skin texture and remove old acne scars?

Is it possible that the Korean Skincare routine does not actually work for everyone? The short answer to this question is yes, and the answer to all your skincare problems that the 11 step system didn’t solve is a “skincare diet”.

The dermis is the largest organ on the body, and is often an indicator of the health of your entire body, think “healthy glow”. For a very long time before expensive skincare and multi step routines, people had nice, glowing skin… considering this...maybe there is such a thing as “too much of a good thing”. Serums, oils, and toners are nice, don’t get me wrong, but they are not NECESSARY. The body does this miraculous thing where it heals itself! So let it! You could well be overloading your skin with products and diminishing its ability to heal on its own...sad face.

I did a “skincare diet” experiment and took it back to basics with my skincare routine. I tried to allow my skin to bounce back on it’s own and it did. I used a gentle foaming cleanser followed by a great moisturiser morning and night, and sunscreen as needed. On a day where I really wanted to do something extra I would dab on some Niacinamide as a spot treatment or put a bit of retinol facial oil on before bed, but that’s it! My skin has never looked or felt healthier and I am now doing so little.

This concept was hard for me to accept as I have always been SO into the multi-step systems, but, *personal anecdote* after watching my boyfriend’s miraculous recovery from a very severe biking accident I realized how truly amazing the body is! It can literally heal itself! I know I’ve mentioned this already but I just need to reiterate how cool it is. We have skin that can be cut and then somehow heal back together, sometimes without even leaving any residual scarring. It’s crazy, it’s beautiful, it’s science.

So, if you are reading this and you are at a loss with your multi-step routine, feeling like making a change, try stripping it. Scale down sis, find a good gel cleanser and a moisturiser that works for your skin and just ride that out for a while.

If you are looking for suggestions on what products to use I have done some reviews of the products I am currently using but you can also book a (free) consultation with me and we can figure out which products would be best for you!
